What Type of Jobs Do Digital Marketing Managers Do?

Those who earn an MBA with a specialization in digital marketing are prepared to take on the job of leading a department as a marketing manager. Marketing managers oversee all aspects of the marketing operation, including strategy, setting goals and overseeing staff or outside consultants who specialize in data analysis, website design, and writing and editing content.

The Demand for Digital Marketers

Because digital marketers are so key to success in modern marketing, they are in demand. While the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not list every position related to digital marketers, it does provide data on one of the biggest jobs, marketing manager.

The BLS projects 10% growth in the field by 2026, faster than the 7% projected for all occupations. That percentage increase translates into more than 22,000 new marketing manager positions.

The mean average wage nationwide for marketing managers reached $145,620 in May 2017, according to the BLS. The top industries for employment of marketing managers, and the annual salary for each, include:

  • Advertising, public relations and related services ($158,790)
  • Management of companies and enterprises ($154,200)
  • Computer systems design and related services ($153,360)
  • Management, scientific and technical consulting services ($144,220)

Illinois employs the second highest number of marketing managers, behind only California. The Chicago metropolitan area is ranked second behind only New York City in the number of marketing managers employed.
