Optional Practical Training (OPT) and
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Some international students at Concordia-Chicago are permitted to work, but finding a job is not always easy, so the university requires all students to bring enough money to study without working. Below are some basics about employment while studying at CUC.
- F-1 students are not allowed to work off campus during their first academic year, but they can accept on-campus employment (with some conditions).
- After their first year, F-1 students can participate in two categories of off-campus employment: curricular practical training (CPT) and optional practical training (OPT).
- CPT is any type of work-study, internship, cooperative education or other type of internship or practicum that is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school. CPT must integrate with an established curriculum.
- OPT is temporary employment that is directly related to your major area of study. If you are eligible, you can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization either before or after completing your academic studies. If you are studying in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering or mathematics), you may be eligible to receive a one-time 24-month OPT extension.

Admission Requirements for International Students
Admission requirements vary by degree type. Please visit the individual overview page linked above for specific Admission Requirements by degree type.
Please note: All documents related to admission should be submitted to Concordia University Chicago’s Office of Graduate Admission and Student Services at least four weeks prior to the term in which the student intends to take classes. International Students must qualify for regular admission to a degree program prior to enrolling in coursework.
English Language Requirements for International Students
Concordia University Chicago is proud to accept qualified students from around the world. Please review the requirements below for English language proficiency.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 72 (internet-based)
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least 6.0
- Password Test score of at least 6.0
- Pearson Test of English score of at least 61
- Proof of successful completion of Level 112 at an ELS Language School or certificate of Completion of Program from an English Language Institute (ELI), along with a recommendation of the program director
- Duolingo score of 90 or above
- Michigan test score of 85
- King George International College (KGIC) English for Post-Secondary Education (EPE) final proficiency test score of 75% with a passing class score of 80.
International applicants who have earned an advanced degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States, or students from an international English-speaking country or university (in which the lingua franca is English) need not submit English language scores. Students that earned a degree from a school outside of the U.S. must submit a letter from the Registrar’s Office at the university where the degree was earned. The letter needs to state that the primary language of the school is English.
